SELECT Flaws
The Rest of the Story About Vitamin E and Selinium

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

Moving my business offices to a new city a few hours away from our old office has resulted in me leaving go many tasks like posting on this blog.

However this could not be passed up.

The SELECT study on vitamin E and Selenium need to be exposed.

The study, if you heard of it, stated that they do no good and could do harm. This is absolutely true. The form of vitamin E and the dose of selenium used in the study could indeed prove harmful to your health. They should be avoided at all costs.

What should you do?

The chemically-derived vitamin E (dl-alpha tocopherol acetate) given at 400 IU per day did have deleterious effects in the SELECT study. What should you conclude? If you see an “l” after the “d” in a vitamin E (see above) then it should be avoided if you read between the lines according to the study.

In this case, this vitamin e is made from coal tar and it has little or no antioxidant properties.

What about selenium that was used in the SELECT study? l-selenomethionine was used at a dose of 200 mcg.

This is the typical dose given to prostate cancer patients, burn patients and numerous others. However, the doctors tend to be divided on the effectiveness of this.

What we know is that selenium is an essential macronutrient. This means it is needed for life and health. This is because it is an essential co-factor in the production of glutathione. Thousands of medical studies show that glutathione plays a major role in fighting cancer.

We also know many dietary and drug interactions could reduce the absorption of the mineral. Reduce the intake and reduce the glutathione formation and increase other complications.

For instance, statins suppress selenium absorption. In the test, this would have had to be accounted for by giving a higher dose.

Since statins damage muscle and nerves, the increased potential diabetes risk could be a side effect of the statin and not the selenium.

So when you hear a study that is not congruent with common knowledge, it may be the result of a flaw.

Increased Cysteine Levels = Decrease Breast Cancer

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

This article is rather interesting because of how large a group it looks at. It lacks the one thing that started me on this quest to understand the ulterior health factors.

The question: What does the cysteine do? The answer: produce the bodies master cancer
fighting warrior, Glutathione. It has natural healing properties.

EPO, Sports and the other Blood Controversy

EPO & Sports: Not the Only Controversy

The news if rife with stories about athletes using EPO to enhance performance.

This is not the only controversy surrounding this cloned version of the human hormone erythropoietin.

A number of doctors are using this drug off label or outside of the pharmaceutical guidelines. Many are doing this to respect the healthcare wishes of their patients wanting alternatives to blood transfusions.

Some are doing this because not only is it good medicine, it is good business.

St Joseph’s Hospital of Cleveland Ohio advertises that it can shorten your hospital stay from 1/2 to three days.

The reason for the growth in the use of this drug is a growing number of patients in the US and the world wanting to eliminate the risk of blood borne diseases. This means if faced with the need for a blood transfusion, they want options or alternative treatments.

The controversy is in the effectiveness of the treatment. A second problem is the black box warning.

Seems some doc’s are giving it too much and too often. The result is too much blood and that causes other problems. Even so, it is advancing the field of alternatives to transfusions.

As a result of advances, two hospitals in the US have virtually eliminated blood transfusions all together.

On the other side of the is the use of blood transfusions when blood counts drop to unsafe levels. The challenge facing health care, what exactly are unsafe levels.

Dr Richard Spence of St Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, MD USA made this comment regarding the practice of blood transfusions.

“…there are no high level studies that show the effecy of blood transfusions.
The studies show the exact opposite.”

But what about when doctors say blood saves lives?

Dr Spence has said in conferences that there is anecdotal evidence but that evidence is not hard science. If an alternative that can have the same or better effect, reduce risk of both infection, complication and even death, why wouldn’t we want to use it.

All of the evidence says it works.

This controversy will not end soon.

The Mindless Middle

There is a mindless middle. A place between the sports controversy and the medical controversy.

In order to prevent the problems some clinicians have found that just giving iron results in the body making enough red blood cells. Many are giving an IV form of iron with remarkable success.

That is not what’s interesting. What is interesting is those who cannot tolerate the IV iron are given black strap molasses and peanut-butter. It works to boost the blood count.

No EPO, just iron, protein, and the building blocks of red blood cells.

There is more…

There is a body of research that says boosting the bodies glutathione levels increases the bodies red cell count.

In my families experience, just a few weeks on one of the glutathione boosting products resulted in a post operation day one blood count higher than the count prior to surgery.
Not only that, there was no infection at the surgery site. As to the healing, well the clinicians said they had never seen anything like it, regarding the heeling being so fast.

So we have gone backwards to advance science.

Can Air Freshners Make Your Health Stale?

The other title:Preserve That Fresh Smelling Room and Your Body Prior to Your Death at a Fraction of the Cost of Embalming with Air Fresheners

One of the most basic underlying or ulterior causes of health problems is foreign substances the human body is exposed to.

This briefly looks at fragrances in air fresheners, the health risks, the chemicals and potential chemical reactions to ambient substances. Links to the original paper and how to find what chemicals are in your fragrances or soaps.

A recent University of Washington Toxic Chemical Paper had some eye opening information. When you click on the link you can down load the paper in PDF form.

An overview…
The first landmark studies were in 1991-2.

The study analyzed 31 fragranced products like perfumes, deodorants, soaps, fabric softeners, and air fresheners found . The most common risk exposure was found in more than one-third of the products. The chemical list was quite long. It included ethanol, limonene, linalool, ?-phenethyl alcohol, ?-myrcene, benzyl acetate, benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde, ?-terpineol, ?-citronellol, and ?-
pinene.

That was over 20 years ago. In a 2001 study analyzed 59 consumer and occupational products. The list included soap, laundry products, dish washing detergents, and cleaners. The study looked at 19 target fragrance compounds.

Of these, the most common chemicals in more than one third of the products, were limonene, linalool, citronellol, eucalyptol, geraniol, and ?-pinene.

But wait… this is not whats interesting.

What is interesting is what the study founds happens to some of these chemicals.

The chemicals were not bad enough on their own. Some of these chemicals can react with normal every day things that may already be in the air we breathe.
When combined, a secondary pollutant can be created.

Without getting into the geekey stuff, air freshener chemicals can combine with ozone to create aldehyde, also known a formaldehyde.

They have also been associated with asthma and asthmatic exacerbations (although other studies deny this finding) and allergic contact dermatitis.

Note…My personal thoughts…Hmmm, breathing in toxic chemicals does not cause asthma problems so they must be safe for asthmatics.

It gets better…the article indicates that the US manufacturers of these products do not need to disclose all ingredients.

Note…If you would like to find out what chemicals are in your fragrances all you need is a MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) This has the product safety information sheets prepared by manufacturers and marketers of products containing toxic chemicals. You do have to join to access the information. It is free.

So, you have a choice. Go ahead and assume they are safe because the government is taking such good care of us, surely they would tell us if these were dangerous. Who knows, maybe science will find that breathing in formaldhyde will preserve you alive even though you die.

Or, become an educated consumer. Avoid the ulterior health risks.

There is one other protection we can take. Since these are everywhere, boosting our bodies detoxifying mechanism will help remove the toxins we take in. The best way to do this is to boost your glutathione.

Sweet Success Boosting Blood Count

Friday, May 30th, 2008

Faced with a 54 year old female who was refusing a blood transfusion, her count at 4.8 from the chemotherapy, the doctors were throwing their hands in the air.

How would we boost the blood count in a cancer patient with out a blood transfusion.

She was being given EPO, a recumbent form of the human hormone that makes precursor cell wannabes turn into red blood cells. It creates an autohyperfusion so that the patient will not need a transfusion.

Only problem, for EPO to work, it needs the building blocks of blood.

It was suggested to offer the patient who had no appetite what so ever a spoon full of peanut butter (protein) and black strap molasses (rich in absorbable iron) three times a day. The result, a o.3 gram per deciliter increase in her count every day until she got to 8.5 where it would rise no higher.

A rise of O.3 Grams is about 1/3 of a unit of blood. Only thing, it was her blood, her wishes observed, and it worked. Bloodless Medicine provided a blood transfusion avoidance option. A cancer treatment with out blood.
