Healthy Eating: Now it is a Mental Illness

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

The Guardian has an interesting post on the Healthy Eating Disorder.

Yes, eating healthy is now a disorder.

Ok, it may be true.

I do know some people who obsess over eating certain foods and supplements to the point that they feel they will live twice as long as those who do not. Yes they get crazy about healthy eating.

I personally plan on living forever. So far so good.

Where does that leave everyone else who are just trying to do the right thing.

Why do we as a society call it junk food? Why do unwanted things end up in the junk yard. Why do we throw away junk but eat junk food.

Now the answer is obvious. Unless you eat junk, you may be suffering from a mental illness.

Ooops, did I say that out loud.

And there is a sound scientific basis for thinking this way.
Consider: a Hostes Twinke has enough preservatives in it to have a shelf life of 7 years, I always thought that if you eat enough you could be preserved alive even if you die.

Good health to you.

Underlying Truths about Testimonials and Acai Berry Scams

Friday, December 25th, 2009

A recent spam posting to UlteriorHealth.com got me to thinking about testimonials. More specifically this is about acai berry testimonials and the acia berry scam.

Acai berries may not be a scam but the people promoting them may be scammers and in my opinion, spammers. This is based on the below person posting on an unrelated topic and having nothing to say about the content.

What is the ulterior motive behind any testimonial? If it is from someone in business, it is to make money. Most people with a business want to make money. However, if in order to make money, a business uses untruthful or now, due to new FTC rules and regulations, illegal testimonials, then what does that say about the product itself.

One problem is if the product manufactrueres allow such testimonials? It makes one wonder.

I for one think Acai berries may be for real and good for you. However, those who are trying to sell them are using psychological tactics to sell them, which makes me want nothing to do with them. I do not sell nor profit from the sale of Acia berries.

Here is an example of a possibly untruthful, now quite possibly illegal posting to this site…..Illegal if I allowed it, that is.

It was by a user of the name Sarah Bell.

I’ve been on acai products for 2 months now and besides the fact that I’m losing weight my energy level is also way higher. I found some reviews and free samples of acai berry diet at you should check it out.

Not a problem on its own. However, a quick search found the same quote in a posting dated 2008 and 2007. This can only mean one thing. She put the weight back on and then lost it again using acai berries. Of course, she would not lie in her testiomnial, would she?

She also advertises under the Acia Berry Scam, Don’t buy untill you read this advertisement. Both link to what appears to be the owner of the same webstie.

As to using the Acai scam, this works. Unfortunatly, it appears this website really does use scams to sell the product. Very facinating.

Well, lets see what the FTC does about this webisite.

I suspect it will be gone soon. It begs the question…if what they are saying is untrue, then what esle is untrue?

There is nothing wrong with testimonials. Just make sure they are truthful, recent and there is real science to back up what is being said. By real, any studies should be found in peer reviewed journals. If the site hosts are using spam tactics or even worse, scams to sell legit products, just do not support them.

The Super Side of Hemp

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

by Fiona Ostermayer

What does the word “hemp” make you think of?  Illegal drugs?  Rope? How about superfoods?

Yes indeed – hemp is actually considered a superfood, but it’s a pretty well-kept secret – especially in the United States.  That’s because the U.S. government has not seen fit as yet, to distinguish between industrial hemp and marijuana, and has therefore banned the growing of any variety of hemp including the useful, industrial kind.

Industrial hemp is eco-friendly and can be grown without pesticides.  It is very different from its botanical cousin, and hemp seeds are without question one of the best sources of protein around.  Hemp protein is considered a complete plant protein because it contains all 20 amino acids essential to human health.

In this superfood we also find the perfect balance (3:1) of Omega 6 to Omega 3 fatty acids, which help to fight cholesterol and are considered essential for optimal health.  Shelled hemp seeds are an excellent source of fiber and help to pull toxins out of the intestines.

You can purchase hemp in powder form, and as a seed butter, oil, or flour, but it is best to consume the seeds raw and unground.  Hemp seeds can be added to cereals and salads, or mixed in with granola.

Already hemp clothing, shoes, car parts, fuel and paper are becoming more common.  Hemp seeds are available at health food stores and on the Internet.  While its price is still a bit high, we can hope that in the near future the United States will lift its ban on production and allow consumers and farmers alike to take better advantage of this healthy and environmentally friendly superfood!

It’s Peak Persimmion Season: Boost Your Glutathione with this Fun Food

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Have you ever tried persimmons? They are a fun food.

They are also a glutathione boosting food too.

In addition to being a food with vitamin A, C, Copper and B6, they have lutein. Lutein is essential for eye health and may lower your risk for cataracts.

They also have more fiber than any other fruit except blackberries and raspberries.

If you count callories, they only have 120.

How do you know if it is ripe?

Hachiya persimmons should be deep red-orange in color and so soft that it might feel like it will be damaged if you pick it up. Oh yea, you eat them with a spoon.

If you find the Fuyu persimmons, they will still be firm when they are ripe.

Unlike supplements, it is unlikely you will overdose on the vitamins when taken as your food. The bonus is that it helps boost your glutathione as well.

In one study using rats, dried persimmons were found to increase the antioxidant glutathione levels. They should be a seasonal part of your glutathione boosting diet.

Enjoy.

Good health to you.

Cholesterol, Cafestol, Coffee, Cancer and Glutathione

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

What do cholesterol, cafestol, coffee, cancer and glutathione all have in common.

They are an example of how a little knowledge can get you in trouble. Yes, there are some health benefits from coffee.

If you heard about a study from the Netherlands (and others) that when the hot water hits the ground coffee beans, a chemical called cafestol is released. Here is the good and bad news.

One cup of coffee can contain 4 mg of cafestol which could make the cholesterol rise by as much as one percent. The simple solution is to use a paper filter. Paper totally blocks the cafestol. Thus no raise in cholesterol.

However, another study found that cafestol and kahweol, both found in unfiltered coffee, act as antioxidants and may have a cancer protective effect.

To Be Coffee or Not to Be Coffee, Filtered That Is?

In my travels, it seems that paper filters are mostly used in the US. Most of the world does not seem to use paper filters. (If you know of data on this, please let me know).

Drinking coffee (most likely unfiltered) has been associated with reducing the risk of liver injury and cirrhosis. This is a major pathogenic step on the road to liver related cancers. Increased coffee consumption around the world is associated with a reduced number of cirrhosis although it has not been proven to be the reason for this.

One thing we do know, cafestol kicks the glutathione system into high gear.

Before you do or do not filter your coffee, think about this.

If you carried the negative aspects of this to its logical conclusion, if you drank a cup of unfiltered coffee daily and every day it raised your cholesterol by one percent where would you be in a month. Two months. What about six months.

So although it raises the cholesterol level, those levels must also go down. So if your otherwise eating a healthy diet, this should not cause any harm. If your trying to reduce your cholesterol, only drink coffee made with paper filters.

Expresso Health Benefits vs Risks

Like wise, if you drink five cups of expresso a day (which is not filtered), the overdosing of the various otherwise protective chemicals could possibly predispose you to increased risk of some diseases like Parkinson’s. The Parkinson’s connection was discovered in an 18 year study. There needs to be more testing on it to confirm the findings but this should be enough to, at the very least, be cautious as to how much coffee you give to your pet lab rats or your husband (depending on how you feel about them tomorrow morning).

The bottom line, all things in moderation.

TIP For Paper Filter Users: I found that by using two paper filters and two scoops (like come with the coffee) per the 8 cup marking of water, the coffee will end up tasting a bit stronger with out having to put more coffee in the hopper.

To really amp up the taste by buying some of the more expensive coffee and bending one scoop of the expensive with the less expensive it provide a better taste at a reduced price.

Want the benefits of cafestol in your coffee maker. Get a screen. You will save on the cost of paper filters and save the environment form a tiny bit of trash.

Green Tip: Use the coffee grounds as fertilizer for both plants and your shrubs. Just dump the used grounds at the base directly on the ground. I know my rhodendrum love this.

Good health to you (and your shrubs)

Miricle Fruit

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

Imagine dripping Tabasco sauce on your tongue and tasting hot doughnut glaze. Or imagine a glop of lemon sorbet in a glass of Guinness tasting like a chocolate shake.
This was the proclamation of a New York Times article (URL Not included for your protection as it had annoying Popups, MFA and Spam Ads as one of the links.)

Nothing is quite as ulterior as a fruit that makes lemons taste sweet.

A new urban sport has emerged from the use of this fruit. It is called flavor tripping. A party is centered around using the fruit and tasting foods. Admission to the party costs about $15.

Where can you learn more about the Synsepalum dulcificum berry of Gahna?

http://www.miraclefruitman.com/ has them for about $90 including shipping and handling for about 30 berries.

Warning…the article did mention some didn’t like the lingering effects of the berry.
Eat something sweet and it may overdo the sensation.

If you know of the berry, please let others know your thoughts.
