Healthy Eating: Now it is a Mental Illness

June 29th, 2010

The Guardian has an interesting post on the Healthy Eating Disorder.

Yes, eating healthy is now a disorder.

Ok, it may be true.

I do know some people who obsess over eating certain foods and supplements to the point that they feel they will live twice as long as those who do not. Yes they get crazy about healthy eating.

I personally plan on living forever. So far so good.

Where does that leave everyone else who are just trying to do the right thing.

Why do we as a society call it junk food? Why do unwanted things end up in the junk yard. Why do we throw away junk but eat junk food.

Now the answer is obvious. Unless you eat junk, you may be suffering from a mental illness.

Ooops, did I say that out loud.

And there is a sound scientific basis for thinking this way.
Consider: a Hostes Twinke has enough preservatives in it to have a shelf life of 7 years, I always thought that if you eat enough you could be preserved alive even if you die.

Good health to you.

What is Oxidative Stress

June 13th, 2010

What is oxidative stress?

Often oxidation will be described as rust in side us. Although rust is a from of oxidation, it is not the same in humans. Not anything close.

Oxidation is better described by an apple first turning brown. Think of an apple as a cell. Then once the brown apple starts rotting, it will start the apples next to it to do the same. This is the basic problem.

Oxidation however does the same thing for bad cells. So it is not totally bad.

It needs to be balanced.

Look Ma, No Dandruff, No Chemicals, Low Cost Poo.

June 12th, 2010

Do the no dandruff shampoos not work for you. They never have for me.

I always wondered why they were called sham-poo. Was there real poo out there. Is there any such thing as a healthy shampoo.

Turns out there is. It is cheap, it works and it is in your cupboard.

Baking Soda Hair Wash

1 Table Spoon Baking soda per cup of water (use about 2 cups per wash).
Sorry, there is no lathering. It will take a bit of getting used to.

Vinegar Rinse

One Table spoon of apple cider vinegar in a cup of water. It may take up to two cups. These can be stored in a bottle.

The vinegar is to neutralize the baking soda.

Next rinse. This will keep your hair from smelling like a tossed salad.

Cold water is best if you can handle it.

In just three days of doing this my dandruff all most totally disappeared.

More importantly, doing this eliminates exposing your scalp to the numerous chemicals and oil robbing detergents used in sham-poo.

Could those chemicals be an underlying cause of any of your health problems? They will not if you do not use them.

Welcome to UberFrugality. You will not only save money, you will save time, health and your life in one action.

Good health to you.

Please let me know if it works for you too.

Blood Transfusions: Another Reason to Avoid Them

June 1st, 2010

Dr. Richard Spence, one of the leading Bloodless Medicine and Surgery Doctors in the world has said that the blood transfusion you avoid may save your life.

Recent developments increase the list of benefits of avoiding transfusions in favor of treating with out blood.

Canada Bans Blood Donations From People with Chronic Fatigue

I am amazed at how many health care professionals will say they do not believe in Bloodless Medicine. It is not religion, it is science.

Science has shown there are safer ways to boost blood counts than transfusions.

I know this as both a scientist and as a nurse who has case managed over 600 cases of those refusing blood, the majority for reasons other than religious ones. The doctors in these cases were all surprised that these patients were getting out of the hospital even faster than those who got blood.

Note that you cannot refuse blood transfusions and do nothing. There needs to be an experienced and skilled bloodless team in place providing your care.

Good health to you.

Chemicals in Cosmetics: Beyond Skin Deep
These May be Bad to the Bone

May 13th, 2010

by Fiona Ostermayer

Do you ever consider the chemicals in cosmetics when ever you put on makeup, use soap or hair spray?

Many of us are becoming more conscious about food and what we put in our bodies. Do you also consider that what you put on your body? Did you know that chemicals used in make up can impact your health?

Chemicals in cosmetics, skin care products and bath products may be highly toxic. Even worse, they can be absorbed through your skin over time they can have a disastrous impact on health.

Public awareness about the potential health risks of chemicals in cosmetics and skin care products is fairly low. The information available from watchdog groups is so great that it can be overwhelming. What can you do?

Simply become an educated consumer.

Chemicals in Cosmetics: The Effect of the Make Up of Make Up

  • Your skin absorbs 60 – 70 percent of whatever you put on it.
  • There is no testing for long-term health effects of chemical ingredients in cosmetics.   The FDA only requires irritancy tests on beauty products.
  • Many of the major commercial beauty product companies torture and maim animals to test their products for irritancy.
  • The FDA does not require cosmetics manufacturers to register their products.
  • Many of the chemicals found in every-day cosmetics are carcinogenic (cancer causing substances).
  • 90 percent of the ingredients in cosmetics have not been tested for safety or long-term health effects.
  • Some estimates say that women absorb over 2 pounds of toxic substances through their makeup and skin products every year!

Here’s a short list of what to avoid:

Parabens – Found in processed foods and cosmetics, parabens are used as preservatives.  They are found naturally in many plants, but those used in consumer products are synthetically made.  Parabens function similar to estrogen, disrupting the endocrine (your hormone) system and increase your risk of getting breast cancer.

Phthalates – Phthalates are petrochemicals used to soften plastics. They are used in hairsprays, perfumes, and mascaras. Recent studies indicate that even low doses of phthalates can increase the risk of development problems for male babies in utero.  The production of phthalates – almost a billion pounds per year – is a major contributor to air and water contamination.

Petrochemicals – Are found in most cosmetics and are derived from petroleum.  They are suspected to be neuro-toxins (toxic to brain), heart, lungs and the immune system.  Petrochemicals may also be listed with names like isoparaffins, petroleum distillates, or propylene glycol.

FD&C Colors – Carcinogenic coal tar derivatives used for color in mascara, eyeshadow, eyeliner and nail polish.

Chemicals in cosmetics are not regulated as strictly by the FDA. Since they are not foods, they are not required to list their ingredients.  This can make it difficult for you to determine whether the cosmetics you purchase are healthy and safe.

Fortunately, more people are becoming aware of this problem. There is a growing demand for organic and vegan cosmetics.

The variety and selection of products that are non-toxic, cruelty-free, and organic is growing.  Think of it this way:  You shop for foods that support your health from the inside out. Now give the same consideration to the personal care products you purchase and support your health from the outside in as well.

H1N1 and Increased Risk of Getting the H1N1?

April 8th, 2010

Check this out. Note that not only are there a few studies, but note where the article was posted.

H1N1 Study

As always, we are not promoting the avoidance of the vaccine. There is evidence based medical backing for using alternatives to protect yourself.

Good health to you and yours.

Green Grass, Green Fertilizer for Little Green

April 6th, 2010

For less than a few dollars you can green up your grass, the healthy way. Healthy for both your grass and for you.

One of the underlying causes of health concerns is exposure to toxins and poisons.

One very dangerous chemical we expose ourselves to annually is the weed and feed applied to our grass.

Here is a very cheap (lite green costing) way to green your grass.

Take the following and mix them and spray on your grass. Do with a hose spray or with a pump up sprayer.

1 Cup Beer (It can be flat but not lite)
1 Cup Ammonia (just the basic kind)
1 Cup Soda (Cola and Not sugar free. Your lawn prefers Pepsi)
1 Cup Dish Soap (the cheapest and most basic)

1 Cup Liquid Nitrogen (only if available and if you will be applying it on a cloudy day. Otherwise it will evaporate before it can get into the soil. Will not hurt if not used.

Spray it on and get the grass green. What about the weeds. Weeds cannot thrive in really healthy grass. Keep your grass healthy and you will not need weed and feed.

More importantly, the mix is safe, biodegradable and green.

Green for the grass, green for the Earth and lite green on your wallet.

Here is what one of my neighbors who I did this for had to say….

” My friends are Green with Envy when they see my grass.” Mrs. Santali was in her 80’s when she said that. She was not paid for her testimonial.

Good health to you and your grass.

Clean Windows: Beneficial and Yet Risky to Your Health

March 29th, 2010

Can clean windows be harmful to our health?

Well, yes and no.

In building a website for a case study on website performance, I was reminded of a health related concern. The website was for a window cleaning company in Virginia.

Cleaning your windows can ruin an otherwise wonderful life. I know. I had to have 52 stitches and still have a scar as a reminder of the danger related to windows. Windows of the non-computer, glass kind.

My accident was from a broken window. My hand went through the window.

When it comes to doing jobs like cleaning our windows, it might be safer to take the attitude, “I don’t do windows.”

However, you need to have your windows cleaned for optimal health.

Why? The window dirt could cause depression. Yes, windows panes can be causing emotional pain.

The solution is simple. Hire it out to professionals.

The reason for hiring it out goes beyond the need for your windows to be seen clean.

Oh, I am not talking about the dirt threshold. Some husbands know to within plus or minus one sock laying around, when their wife will start to throw things. The weight and size of the things they will toss will be directly proportional to the angst the dirt causes them.

No, it has nothing to do with that kind of dirt.

Dirty windows need to be cleaned because of a potential health risk. You can read about it at a dear friend’s website.

Oh yeah, the site is StauntonWindowCleaning.com

For the post about clean windows and health, look for the picture of a cat looking out the window. There is actually science behind this.

Good health to you.

First H1N1 Swine Flu Clinical Trial Nearing Completion

February 7th, 2010

The CDC said on one website that the H1N1 Vaccine has been a success.

But how do they know that.

Simple. It is a theory. They hope the theory will be proved true. The first study to prove if the vaccine even works is scheduled to be completed March 10th, 2010.

Yep, many of the studies are only in Phase II. In Phase II trials, the experimental study drug or treatment is given to a larger group of people (100-300) to see if it is effective and to further evaluate its safety. There still is Phase III, and Phase IV to go.

Go to …. http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ and type in H1N1.

There are close to 60 studies.

So, if you got the vaccine, then you are part of the unofficial Phase III trials. Since the trials are in Phase II, it can only be assumed that everyone who got the vaccine was in Phase III. By the way, how much did you get paid to be a guinea pig.

Typically in trials, people get paid.

Hoping that it did you no harm (why would anyone want to inject mercury or antifreeze, both poisons to humans, into their bodies to promote health is a curiosity).

There are a number of things you can do to boost your immunity. The simplest is getting exercise, getting outside and getting some sun and eating foods that raise your glutathione.

…Good health to you.

How Many Died From Swine Flu Since 2009?

February 6th, 2010

First, this is not to support any conspiracy theories. This is not to support the notion that big pharma conspired to make billions on a worthless vaccine. This just shows a fallacy of human thinking, and the truth of what Mark Twain once said.

There are liars, d(arn) liars and statisticians.

Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Profits

What red blooded corporate executive worth his golden parachute would not jump on a chance to make his shareholders barrels of money, even if it is because of numbers hyped by a media starving for revenues.

How is the media going to get otherwise complacent followers unless there is something urgent to follow.

Thus was born the H1N1 Swine Flu Debacle, er eh story, news, I mean crisis.

Here is some of the underlying information on how its going.

From the CDC website, from April to October, there were about 90,000 people who may or may not have had the 2009 H1N1 Swine Flu. Yep, may or may not have had it. This is because all the numbers are estimates. The 90,000 is the range between 73,000 and 163,000 estimated number of those infected.

Think about this. You go to your mechanic and say you need your car fixed and the mechanic says it could cost about $100 to $24,000 dollars to fix your car, give or take a few dollars.

OK, cars and people are not the same. Still, this is like saying the Scranton Pennsylvania population, based on census counts, given the same margin of error, is 76,414 to 166,000 based on scientifically extracted estimates.

Here is the problem. All the numbers are estimates. Guesses. And with that wide of a range, the margin of error has to be great.

As always, just avoiding something because people say it is bad for you, like the swine flu shot, is not wise. You still need to boost your bodies immunity. If not, you just as well get the shot and take your chances of getting a rare neurological disease.

Just a side note, one of the survivors of the last flu debacle who got that rare neurological disease lives and works here in Scranton, PA.

And the natural health people do not always have all the answers either. Some are so religious about their natural health care beliefs that they border on fanaticism. It is as if you take their herbal what ever, you will be preserved alive even if you die.

Sorry, but we are all going to die. Me, personally, I plan on living forever. So far so good.

But, not everything natural is healthful.

Speaking to a woman the other day and warning her of the dangers of colloidal silver turning her skin gray ( a condition called argyria), she said, “Well, I am taking it and it has not turned my skin gray.” Wonderful. A true scientific proof that it is safe.

But wait…what about Rosemary or Stan Jones (the politician).

Or there is the man who took colloidal silver orally about 16 ounces (~ 450 ml) of 450 ppm colloidal silver three times a day for 10 months. He found it improved his arthritis. He stopped when his skin began to turn gray.

There is a gentleman who turned blue from using it on his skin in cream form.

So, if you are using colloidal silver and it has not turned you blue or gray, keep using it. When it does, please drop us a line. Maybe after a number of people are feeling blue from the result of having gray skin, then people will stop taking it.

Oh yes, although colloidal silver is banned for medical use, you can still get it as a supplement. Who sells it. The same people who say that doctors don’t want you to know about it. Sorry, but even the doctors don’t know about it, because it is banned from medical use because it causes argyria.

Until we die (or turn gray or blue as the case may be), become an informed consumer of your own health care.

Good health to you and yours.
